Did you Know
BANGALORE - The Garden City...
Prior to developments in the last few decades, Bangalore was a well laid out city with many spacious gardens, which provided it the moniker, the Garden City. It therefore served traditionally as a retreat for people from the surrounding South Indian regions. Even today, the city administration manages to maintain several excellent parks. Cubbon Park and Lal Bagh are just two such examples.
1. Bangalore - The electronic city:
Electronics City is an electronics industrial park spread over 332 acres (1.3 km˛) in Konappana Agrahara and Doddathogur villages, just outside Bangalore, India. It houses more than a hundred industries, including IT industry leaders such as Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Infosys, Siemens, ITI, Wipro, Satyam etc. The area is maintained by Keonics, which provides all the necessary infrastructure.
The Electronics City was the brainchild of R.K. Baliga, the first Chairman and Managing Director of Keonics, Karnataka Electronics. He dreamt of making Bangalore the Silicon Valley of India when he developed the concept of Electronic City. He did not live to see his dream materialize (he died in 1988). The liberalisation of the Indian economy in the early 1990's by the then Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and then Indian Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh helped Electronic City to become what it is today-the outsourcing capital of the world.
With the development of Electronics City Phase 2, many more companies have set up shop here and this has led to enormous strain on the connecting roads from Bangalore. In November 2004 the government decided to construct a 9 kilometer long elevated road to enable smoother traffic flow. Work is already started and is expected to be complete by middle of the year 2008.
Electronics City also is the home of the International Institute of Information Technology - Bangalore which is one of the premier graduate schools in India, focussing on all aspects of Information Technology.
